I recently watched the video by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, and found his perspective and mode of expression quite refreshing. I thought I'd mention a couple of things here to let folks know what's in this video. First of all it runs for about an hour and he teaches in English. The context is the opening session of the Rangjung Yeshe Institute in KTM.

In this teaching, Rinpoche describes himself as a "Buddhist jihadi" in the sense that his purpose is to shake things up a bit and defy some conventional wisdom. I enjoyed the paradoxes he put forth, such as on the one hand claiming that Buddhism is a 'rational' path, while a few minutes later asserting that practitioners need to 'let go of common sense' if they hope to gain realization.

In another seemingly iconoclastic move, he uses the Hindu concepts of the paths of life--dharma (morality/duty), artha (management/business), kama (pleasure), and moksha (liberation) to explain Buddhism's emphasis on liberation. He says that we need to pay attention to the other parts of life as well, but, just as we need a cell phone to manage our life, no technology or worldly aim will bring liberation.

This barely does justice to his message or style, but if you watch the video, you'll get a better picture. Thanks to Debbie for posting the message. Watching this clip was a good way to spend some tim after a long week. PG
